Hot-Springs
is located in the Ouachita Mountains of Garland County in central Arkansas. It's set among 47 natural hot springs, for which it's named. As of the 2010 census, the population was 35,193. The center of the city is the oldest federal reserve in the U.S., and preserved as Hot Springs National Park. The hot springs were subject to many legends among the Native American tribes for centuries and believed to posses medicinal properties. In 1832, Hot Springs was developed into a popular spa town, and incorporated in 1851. Over the years, the historic city has been home to illegal gambling, speakeasies, and frequented by gangsters such as Al Capone. Today, it's a tourist mecca and was named No. 4 among "America's Top 100 Small Arts Towns." Attractions include Oaklawn Park, a thoroughbred racing facility, Magic Springs and Crystal Falls theme parks, the Hot Springs Music Festival and the Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival. Other annual events in Hot Springs include the Valley of Vapors Festival, the Hot Springs Jazz Festival in September, and the Hot Springs Blues Festival in September. This is just the tip of the iceberg, however. Bathhouse Row, which consists of eight turn-of-the-20th-century buildings lies within Hot Springs National Park. Sitting atop Hot Springs Mountain in the park is the Hot Springs Mountain Tower, a 216 feet observation tower built in 1982. Other places to visit include the Arkansas Alligator Farm and Petting Zoo, Garvan Woodland Gardens, which consists of a botanical garden and a Japanese-themed garden, Lake Hamilton and Lake Catherine. The lakes offer fishing, boating and other water recreation and camping. All of this, plus shopping, music, theater, and every type of restaurant imaginable makes Hot Springs a perfect vacation holiday destination.
