Texarkana is located in the southwest corner of Arkansas and is the county seat of Miller County. It's half of a city that crosses a state line - the other half is the city of Texarkana, Texas. The dividing line is on State Line Avenue. As of the 2010 census, the population of Texarkana, Arkansas was 29,919, making it the state's 12th largest city. The combined cities in the two states had a population of 66,330 as of the 2010 census. Both cities are historic railroad towns that saw their beginnings in the late 1850s. The builders of the Cairo and Fulton Railroad were pushing their line steadily across Arkansas, and by 1874, they had crossed the Red River and had reached the Texas state line. The Red River Bridge opened on March 20, 1874, and since then trains have run directly from Texarkana to St. Louis. There was keen rivalry between the 1870s railroad builders. The Texas and Pacific Railroad reached across Texas to the Arkansas state line. The border was the logical place for the different railways to connect. On December 8, 1873, the Texas and Pacific sold the first town lots for the future city. First to buy was J.W. Davis, who purchased the land where todays Hotel McCartney now stands, opposite Union Station. Today, both cities offer fine dining and lodging. Many hotels are located close to the convention centers and hotels, making it convenient for those using the town for meetings and seminars.

This part of the state receives lots of precipitation in the form of rain and thunderstorms and very little snow. Southwest Arkansas is close enough to the Gulf of Mexico for it to greatly influence the weather. Tropical storms often dumps large amounts of water in a short period of time. Very warm weather may last well into November, with the cooler temps of winter not arriving until the first of December.
