Calico-Rock
is located in Izard County in north-central Arkansas. The population, as of the 2010 census, was 1,545 residents. The town was named for the colorful rock formations in the area that the early pioneers said resembled the popular calico fabric of the time. Calico Rock is nestled in the heart of the Ozark Mountains on the banks of the beautiful White River. The town offers a quiet atmosphere with amenities which make it a special place to live or to visit. Attractions include the Calico Rock Museum which features Birth of the Ozark", an interactive exhibit that shows Native American history. Calico Rock has excellent schools, a hospital, and numerous retail establishments along with a historic downtown area which hosts thousands of visitors each year. The quaint stone and brick storefronts beckon visitors to browse and harkens back to another, slower era of history. Things to do near Calico Rock include fishing, rafting and tubing the White River, camping, hiking, mountain biking, picnicking and scenic drives. Fishing for trout is popular in the upper portions of the White River, from Beaver Lake in northwestern Arkansas, through its course through southwest Missouri (including all of Lake Taneycomo), and back down through Arkansas to the Highway 58 bridge in Guion. The river has long been ranked one of the top trout fisheries in the country. Fishing for white bass is also popular in the White River.

Northern Arkansas is an area of rugged hills and deep valleys. It's the coolest part of the state in the wintertime and also receives the most snow than any other part of the state. Sleet and freezing rain are also possible in winter. This region generally receives several inches of snow each year due to the proximity to the plains states and the higher elevations. Summers are hot and humid, with frequent thunderstorms. Arkansas is known for being in the path of tornadoes. Also, while being far enough away from the coast to be safe from a direct hit from a hurricane, the state can often get the remnants of a tropical system which dumps tremendous amounts of rain in a short time and often spawns smaller tornadoes.
