Atkins
is a small town located in Pope County in the north-central part of the state along the Arkansas River. The population is approximately 3,000 people. It's part of the Russellville micropolitan statistical area, and a nearby 752-acre lake called Atkins Lake is a popular fishing destination. The lake is stocked with an abundance of largemouth bass, catfish, crappie and bream. Atkins is known as "the pickle capital of Arkansas." The town celebrates the pickle with a festival called Picklefest on the third weekend in May. The town of Atkins actually began as a railroad town, and served as a center for river traffic. Then, in 1956, Lake Atkins was created from Galla and Horsehead Creeks as a recreation area and tourism became important to the economy of the town. Nearby, the larger city of Russellville is home to Arkansas Tech University and is the regional shopping and dining hub of the area. Russellville is also known for its local art scene, music and historic downtown area. Special events include the Downtown Art Walk and the annual Pope County Fair. The towns of Russellville and Atkins are close to Mt. Nebo and several other state parks, making it a great place to base your northern Arkansas vacation.

Northwest Arkansas has a humid, subtropical climate that borders on humid continental. This area of the state is between the Ouachita Mountains to the south and Ozark Mountains to the north. Average annual precipitation is 51 inches. Overall, the climate along the Arkansas River is very moderate, which allows for crops unique to this region of the state, such as the wine grapes. Severe weather is mostly in the form of thunderstorms and ice storms or sleet in the wintertime and tornadoes, especially in spring. Arkansas also often receives the remnants of a tropical system which dumps tremendous amounts of rain in a short time and may spawn smaller tornadoes.
