Clarksville is located in Johnson County in northwest Arkansas. As of 2011, the estimated popular was 9,251 residents. The county seat of Johnson County, Clarksville is nestled between the foothills of the Ozark Mountains and the Arkansas River. It's home to the University of the Ozarks, a private, liberal arts based university. Clarksville is also known for its peaches, scenic byways and abundance of outdoor activities. Clarksville is a small, but progressive and vibrant city that is midway between Little Rock and Fort Smith. This is where the Ozark Mountains and the alluvial plains provides a combination of breathtaking scenery and the availability of sites flat enough for expansive Industrial activities. Nearby is the Arkansas River, Lake Dardanelle and the Ozark National Forest. Clarksville is home to the Johnson County Peach Festival. Since 1938, this nearly week long event (starts on a Tuesday and ends on Saturday) attracts visitors from all over the country. Activities and events include Barbershop chorus, gospel music, good ol home cookin, handmade arts and crafts, street dance, frog jumping contest, terrapin derby, greased pig chase, a 4-mile run, parade, jam and jelly bake-off and of course peach and peach cobbler eating contests. It all concludes with the crowning of Queen Elberta, Miss Arkansas Valley and Miss Teen Arkansas Valley pageants. Another attraction is The Oark General Store, located 22 miles north of Clarksville in the community of Oark. This is the oldest store in Arkansas that has remained in continuous operation, and is listed on the Register of Historical Places in Arkansas.
