Magazine
is a small city located in northwestern Arkansas near Mount Magazine State Park. The town of Magazine had a population of 847 as of the 2010 census. Mount Magazine is the name of the tallest mountain in the state of Arkansas and is the site of the state park. This spectacular flat-topped plateau with a sandstone cap is rimmed by precipitous rock cliffs. Two peaks are situated atop the plateau, Signal Hill, which is often identified as the tallest point in Arkansas, and Mossback Ridge, which reaches 2,700 feet. Mount Magazine sits in the middle of the Ozark National Forest in the Arkansas River Valley along Highway 309 (also known as the Mount Magazine Scenic Byway). The most scenic route to the top of the mountain is a 10-mile drive north from Havana, Arkansas. Gorgeous views of Blue Mountain Lake can be seen throughout the journey to Mount Magazine. Hiking is especially popular at Magazine, with trails ranging from easy, moderate and strenuous. One hiking trail leads to the top of the mountain. Other things to do at Mount Magazine State Park include camping, rock climbing, rappelling, hang gliding, mountain biking, horseback riding, geocaching, backpacking, and ATV adventures. Mount Magazine is the state park systems most dramatic location for technical rock climbing. The best place to begin your visit is at the 8,000-square-foot visitor center. The visitor center features exhibits on the geology, history, flora, and fauna of Mount Magazine, and has a large wildlife observation area overlooking a native plant garden. The center is located across from the Greenfield picnic area at the junction of Scenic Highway 309 and the road to the Cameron Bluff Overlook.
