Fort Smith Weather & Climate

West-central Arkansas, on the Oklahoma border, has hot, humid summers and mild, dry winters. The topography of the land and its proximity to the plains to the west and the Gulf of Mexico to the south play a significant role in the weather. The climate is humid sub-tropical, but borders on humid continental. Fall arrives in September with cooler temps, but it has been known to be 90 degrees as late as mid-November. Winters can be harsh for brief periods of time. Minor ice accumulations happen almost every winter, while major ice storms happen every five to ten years. Snow is usually not significant in this region. The first hints of spring arrive by early March, with most vegetation reaching full bloom by early April. Floods and severe thunderstorms are threats from March to May.
