Ozark
is in the heart of Arkansas' wine country in the northwest part of the state. The town is located along the Arkansas River on the southern edge of the Ozark Mountains. This area of the bend in the Arkansas River was given the name "Aux Arc" by early French explorers, and later simplified to "Ozark." The town of Ozark was incorporated in 1850 and contains a bridge that crosses the Arkansas River for those traveling south. The city is also located on Arkansas Highway 23, nicknamed the Pig Trail Scenic Byway, known for its steep drops, sharp curves and scenic mountain views. Downtown Ozark features a number of historic sites, including the old Missouri Pacific Depot, which now serves as a museum and houses many artifacts related to the citys history. Murals can be found throughout the city. The quintessential town square is filled with antique and gift shops, colorful crape myrtle shrubs are in bloom summer through fall, and a park is located across from the courthouse. Be sure to visit the old Franklin County Jail, which features a distinctive stone facade resembling a medieval castle. The town of Ozark also serves as the southern starting point for the Pig Trail Scenic Byway. This 19 mile scenic drive begins just north of Ozark where Highway 23 enters the Ozark National Forest and leads drivers through beautiful rolling mountains and past waterfalls, rock formations and the beautiful Mulberry River. Activities in the area include hiking, kayaking and canoeing, biking, picnicking, camping, scenic drives and wine tasting.
