Altus
is located in Franklin County in northwest Arkansas, near the city of Fort Smith. The population is of Altus is less than 1,000. Attractions in the town include the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, which is on the National Register of Historic Places. Also known as St. Mary's Catholic Church, it was built in 1902 and is known for its ornate gold-leaf walls, beautiful paintings and Roman architecture. Altus is also home to three of Arkansas' six wineries, and a fourth is nearby. Each year the town hosts Spring Gala, Grapefest, Dinner in the Vineyards and Wineauz Fest, and thousands of visitors come to tour the wineries and taste the award-winning wines. The German-Swiss heritage of the small village of Altus has been preserved by its residents, including their art of wine making. The state of Arkansas is the oldest, and largest, grape juice and wine producing state in the southern United States. Downtown Altus has a classic small downtown square design, and offers visitors lots of dining and shopping opportunities. A city park is part of the town square, which pays tribute to the town's coal mining history. In pop culture, the town of Altus was the location of the first season of the TV show The Simple Life starring Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie. Just an hour's drive from Altus are Mt. Magazine State Park, Lake Dardanelle State Park, the Mulberry River and the Ozark National Forest.

Northwest Arkansas , along the Arkansas River, the climate is humid, subtropical. This area of the state is between the Ouachita Mountains to the south and Ozark Mountains to the north. The average January temperature is 40 F., and the average July temperature is 82 F. The average annual precipitation is 51 inches. Overall, the climate along the Arkansas River is very moderate, which allows for crops unique to this region of the state, such as the wine grapes. Severe weather is mostly in the form of thunderstorms and ice storms or sleet in the wintertime and tornadoes, especially in spring. Arkansas also often receives the remnants of a tropical system which dumps tremendous amounts of rain in a short time and may spawn smaller tornadoes.
