Bull-Shoals-Lake
is a man-made lake located in the Ozark Mountains of northern Arkansas and southern Missouri. It was created when the Bull Shoals Dam was created to impound the White River. Work began on the dam in 1947 and at the time was the 5th largest dam in the world. Bull Shoals Lake has miles of lake arms and coves perfect for swimming, boating, fishing and other water sports. There are over 20 developed parks around the shoreline that provide campgrounds, boat launches, swim areas, and marinas. Bull Shoals-White River State Park is a 725-acre park located in Baxter and Marion Counties, above and below the dam. All along the lakeshore are picnic sites and playgrounds. The lake is especially well-known for its fishing - some even say synonymous with fishing in Arkansas. The lake has a total of 45,500 surface acres and 60,000 acres of public land. Almost 1,000 miles of beautiful, rugged shoreline is open to visitors. Swimming, water-skiing, even scuba diving are available and draw visitors from not only Arkansas, but surrounding states, as well. Attractions in the area include Mountain Village 1890, the Ozark Folk Center, Blanchard Springs Caverns, Bull Shoals Caverns, and Mystic Caverns. Driving tours include Fall Foliage Tours, Ozark Mills Tour, Glade Top Trail and the Ozark Driving Tour.

North-central Arkansas, near the Missouri border, lies the Ozark Plateau, an area of rugged hills and deep valleys. It's both the coolest and the driest part of the state, and the seasons are more distinct here than in other areas of the state. The average January temperature is 34.9, and the average July temperature of 79. This area receives an average of 45.20 inches of precipitation each year. More snow falls each winter in this part of the state than in any other. Summers are hot, hazy and humid, with frequent thunderstorms. Arkansas is also prone to weather extremes, such as tornadoes and receives on average 26 each year. It's far enough away from the Gulf Coast to be safe from a direct hit from a hurricane. However, it can get the remnants of a tropical system which dumps tremendous amounts of rain in a short time and may spawn smaller tornadoes.
