Mena
is a city located in the Ouachita National Forest in southwest Arkansas. The population of Mena is approximately 5,600 people. The city of Mena serves as a gateway to the Ouachita National Forest and many of the other tourist attractions of southwestern Arkansas. An estimated 1.2 million visitors come through Mena each year on their way to places such as the Talimena Scenic Drive and the Queen Wilhelmina State Park. The Cossatot River, which is included in the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System, runs through the Ouachita National Forest. Other nearby attractions include Lake Ouachita, the Black Fork Mountain Wilderness and so much more. The town of Mena has lots of businesses and attractions on its own, and of course, caters to the many tourists that visit their lovely town each year. Visit the town's restored train depot and gas station, its shopping district and fine arts district and many fine restaurants. The breath-taking vistas of Talimena National Scenic Byway will astound you, and is especially popular during the autumn months. Along the drive, you will find lodging, picnicking, hiking and camping. The Eastern Visitor Center sits at the base of Round Top Mountain at the end of the 54-mile Talimena Scenic Drive. There are also many, many hiking trails along the scenic drive and near the town of Mena. Other popular attractions in the area include the early settlement of Acorn and Shut-in-Valley, which has no man-man structures and can be seen from Round Mountain Vista.

West-central Arkansas, has hot, humid summers and mild, dry winters. The topography of the land and its proximity to the western plains and the Gulf of Mexico play a significant role in the weather. The climate is humid sub-tropical, but borders on humid continental. It has been known to be 90 degrees as late as mid-November. Lasting cooler temps don't stay around until December. Winters can be harsh for brief periods of time. Minor ice accumulations happen almost every winter, while major ice storms happen every five to ten years. The first hints of spring arrive by early March, with most vegetation reaching full bloom by early April. Floods and severe thunderstorms are threats from March to May.
