Caddo-Gap is an unincorporated community located in Montgomery County in west-central Arkansas. It lies along the Caddo River between the towns of Glenwood and Norman. The population is less than 100 people. Caddo Gap is perhaps best known for being a place of historical interest. It is here that explorer Hernando de Soto clashed with the Tula Tribe. Afterwards, his expedition turned east, making it as far as the Mississippi River, where de Soto died. In history books, it's contested whether he died of fever, or from a wound received during the fighting with the Tula Tribe. At that spot, members of his expedition had a burial ceremony and sent his body into the river. A monument to de Soto stands in the heart of Caddo Gap. The little community is near the Albert Pike Recreational Area, which is located within the Ouachita National Forest. Albert Pike Recreational Area has swimming and camping on the Little Missouri River. The Ouachita Forest contains several hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding trails, as well as mountain biking on some sections of the trails. In addition, the Talimena Scenic Drive is a National Scenic Byway that meanders through the forest. The headquarters for the Ouachita Forest are located in Hot Springs, Arkansas.
