Murfreesboro
is a small city located in Pike County in southwestern Arkansas. The population is less than 2,000. Murfreesboro is most well-known for the popular Crater of Diamonds State Park, located just south of town. The "crater" at Crater of Diamonds State Park is an eroded lamproite pipe where diamonds were discovered in 1906. A total of 100,000 diamonds were found by 1933, and visitors to the park may still take away whatever they can find. Hillary Clinton wore a 4.25 carat yellow diamond known as The Kahn Canary Diamond, found at the park in 1977, to the inaugural balls in 1993 and 1997. Crater of Diamonds State Park is the only diamond-producing site in the world open to the public. Diamonds aren't the only gems found here; more than 40 types of rocks and minerals including lamproite, amethyst, banded agate, jasper, peridot, garnet, quartz, calcite, barite, and hematite can be found. Other attractions near Murfreesboro include the 1,000-year-old Ka-Do-Ha Indian Village and museum, which offers a field that can be excavated for authentic arrowheads. Murfreesboro is also near Daisy State Park and Lake Greeson, a 7,000-acre recreational lake, popular for its fishing. The lake has been stocked with striped bass, black bass, crappie, bream, catfish, white bass and smallmouth bass. The Little Missouri River, above and below Lake Greeson, is stocked with rainbow trout. Lake Greeson and the surrounding parks offer 416 campsites and 102 picnic sites, houseboat and kayak rentals, 6 swimming areas, playgrounds, hiking and ATV trails, 10 boat ramps and several marinas.
