Mount-Ida
is a small city located in Montgomery County in west-central Arkansas. It's very near the Ouachita National Forest, which is also in Montgomery County. As of the 2010 census, the population of Mount Ida was 1,076 residents. The city of Mount Ida is known as "the Quartz Cystal Capital of the United States," due to its large quartz deposits. Rockhounds frequent the area and are free to pick up loose crystals within designated areas for personal use and may dig for quartz with the permission of the district ranger. The nearby Ouachita National Forest is the South's oldest and largest national forest. The forest contains numerous hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding trails. The most extensive hiking trail is the Ouachita National Recreation Trail, which traverses 223 miles across the region. It's a well-maintained backpacking trail, with overnight shelters in several portions along the trail. In the Oklahoma section of the forest the 26,445-acre Winding Stair Mountain National Recreation Area and six other designated areas offer visitors a full range of activities with more than 150 campsites, a 90-acre lake, and an equestrian camp. Canoeing and fishing are popular activities along many of the rivers in the area.
