Jasper is a small town in northwestern Arkansas' Newton County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 466 residents. The town of Jasper is part of the Harrison micropolitan area. The community is a quaint, picturesque mountain town, at the headwaters of the Buffalo River. More than one-third of Newton County is owned by either the National Park Service, U.S.D.A. Forest Service, State of Arkansas or county government. The area offers lots of outdoor recreational opportunities like hiking, canoeing, caving, rock climbing, fishing, hunting, mountain biking and horseback riding. Jasper is known as the Elk Capital of Arkansas. A herd of about 450 elk roam the Buffalo River corridor at Boxley Valley, Steel Creek, Kyles Landing, Erbie, Ozark, Pruitt, and on private lands. American Cowboy Magazine named Jasper as one of their "Five Spots for Family Reunions" in September 2012. Jasper has a pretty downtown square with a courthouse in the middle and gazebos on the grounds. The annual Buffalo River Elk Festival takes place here. Arkansas Scenic Byway 7, the states first national scenic byway, cuts through the heart of the county, running north and south. The city of Harrison is about 20 miles from Jasper and Russellville and Branson are 60 miles away.

Jasper Weather & Climate

Northern Arkansas is an area of rugged hills and deep valleys. This area is the coolest and driest part of the state. It also receives the most snow than any other part of the state, and may also receive sleet and freezing rain. This region generally receives several inches of snow each year due to the proximity to the plains states and the higher elevations. Summers are hot and humid, with frequent thunderstorms. Arkansas is known for being in the path of tornadoes. Also, while being far enough away from the coast to be safe from a direct hit from a hurricane, the state can often get the remnants of a tropical system which dumps tremendous amounts of rain in a short time and often spawns smaller tornadoes.
